The Spanish Association for Vehicle Dismantling and Recycling (AEDRA) successfully organized the presentation titled “The Challenge for Authorized Treatment Centers (CATs) in Light of the Upcoming European Regulation” during the Motortec 2025 trade fair, held at IFEMA Madrid on the 23rd April. This event brought together numerous professionals from the sector of Authorized Treatment Centers (CATs), who discussed the challenges posed by the forthcoming European regulations concerning end-of-life vehicles.

During the presentation, AEDRA gave a detailed overview of the initial proposals of the upcoming EU regulation and how these are being adapted to reflect the specific characteristics of Spain’s vehicle dismantling and recycling industry. Key topics addressed included the need for a well-structured network of vehicle treatment companies, modernization of existing facilities, and the implementation of measures to ensure compliance with current legislation.
One of the highlights of the event was the discussion surrounding the European Commission’s proposal requiring that at least 25% of the plastic used in the manufacturing of new vehicles comes from recycled materials. This initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at promoting a circular economy within the automotive sector, improving vehicle design to facilitate sustainable dismantling, and encouraging the reuse of components.
The presentation also emphasized the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders to meet the challenges facing the sector. During the event, AEDRA signed cooperation agreements with organizations such as Ganvam, Faconauto, eBAJA, AZELER, Mutua de Propietarios, and eBay. These partnerships aim to strengthen synergies and promote best practices in vehicle recycling.
The active participation of attendees and the strong interest in the topic underscored the relevance of the issue and the urgent need to adapt to new regulatory demands. AEDRA continues to work toward being a valid and effective intermediary between public administrations and economic stakeholders, advocating for the modernization and proper equipping of Spain’s dismantling and recycling industries.
AEDRA’s presentation at Motortec 2025 served as a vital forum for analyzing and discussing the implications of the upcoming European Regulation on end-of-life vehicles. It highlighted the essential role of collaboration and sector adaptation in addressing new environmental and legislative challenges.
