Belgium expands its precycling activities for large batteries to Sweden

Sortbat Group and Nemax have launched “Sortbat Sweden, operated by Nemax” to provide independent precycling services for large batteries in Sweden. The new entity combines Sortbat’s EV-battery expertise with Nemax’s hazardous-waste experience, offering transport, storage, dismantling, discharge, second-life assessment and routing to certified recyclers for all battery chemistries.

Sortbat Group and Nemax Miljöhantering AB launch “Sortbat Sweden, operated by Nemax”, a new joined collaboration that combines the precycling of large energy-storage batteries with expertise in hazardous waste. From day one, the new entity will offer the full service portfolio: from secure transport and storage to dismantling and the assessment of batteries’ second-life potential. The company handles all types of batteries, regardless of their chemistry. Sortbat Sweden, operated by Nemax, is the third entity within the Sortbat Group.

A complete and independent solution for the Swedish battery market

Sortbat Sweden, operated by Nemax, offers specialised services: safe transport and storage, on-site assessment with risk classification, ADR-compliant packaging, controlled discharge, dismantling, second-life assessment and routing to certified recyclers.

The new entity is independent. The company does not operate a recycling plant and is not affiliated with any Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) or specific battery or equipment manufacturer (OEM). Every battery is routed to the destination that creates the most value, whether reuse, second-life certification or end-of-life recycling, and Sortbat Sweden is available to every PRO, every importer, every recycler and every direct customer in the Swedish market.

Daniel Chéret, Group CEO, Sortbat, said:

“With Sortbat Sweden, operated by Nemax, we are doing what we believe Europe needs: to be a battery partner that is truly locally rooted and pan-European in reach. Nemax is exactly the experienced partner with whom we wanted to build this project.

Sweden was the logical next step after Belgium and Norway. Our role is not to compete with recyclers or producer responsibility organisations, but to serve them as effectively as possible. We want to ensure that every battery, regardless of its chemistry or condition, ends up where it creates the most value.”

Built on Swedish hazardous-waste DNA

Battery precycling is at its core a discipline within hazardous-waste management. Discharge, packaging, transport, isolation, thermal-incident response, these are all operational practices that Nemax has been refining since 1991 within the Swedish industrial landscape. Founded by Anki Bergstedt and based near Örebro, the company holds the permits, customer relationships and operational standards that responsible battery management requires. By combining Nemax’s 35 years hazardous-waste expertise with Sortbat’s 10 years of EV-battery knowhow, Sortbat Sweden does not start its Swedish journey from scratch.

Nemax continues to serve its existing industrial customers under its own brand. Sortbat Sweden, operated by Nemax, adds a dedicated battery-handling capability to the Swedish market, without disrupting either company’s operations, and with full continuity of the relationships Nemax has built over the years.

Anki Bergstedt, Founder and CEO, Nemax Miljöhantering AB, said:

“For 35 years, Nemax has built its reputation on safe and professional hazardous-waste management in Sweden, including batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are the natural next step in that journey. Together with Sortbat, we combine Nemax’s operational expertise with Sortbat’s specialized Lithium-ion battery knowledge.”

A Nordic network with European reach

Sortbat Sweden is the Sortbat Group’s third national presence, alongside Sortbat Belgium (founded in 2010) and Sortbat Norway (founded in 2015). Through the network, Swedish customers gain direct access to Norwegian experience in maritime batteries, Watt4Ever’s second-life expertise, and the Group’s Flying Technicians on-site intervention methodology, a service category developed by Sortbat in Norway and now extended to Sweden. Knowledge, protocols and equipment are shared across borders, while each national entity remains locally rooted and locally operated.

The Swedish battery market is entering a decisive phase: the volume of end-of-life batteries from electric vehicles is rising sharply, as is their diversity, passenger EVs, light electric vehicles, hybrids, BESS and maritime. From launch, the new entity is available to:

  • Car importers, manufacturers (OEMs), dealers and vehicle dismantlers
  • Leasing companies and fleet managers
  • BESS operators, developers and EPC contractors
  • Shipyards, ferry operators and shipping companies
  • Insurance companies and loss adjusters
  • Industrial customers operating trucks, forklifts and construction equipment
  • PROs looking for a neutral, specialised partner

Nicklas Pålerud, Sales Manager, Nemax Miljöhantering AB, said:

“Our customers have been asking for a trusted partner to handle Litihum-ion batteries with the same operational discipline we apply to chemicals and other hazardous waste. With Sortbat Sweden, operated by Nemax, we can now offer exactly that.”
