Delhi Govt Withdraws Fuel Ban on Older Vehicles After Public Outcry

In a swift policy reversal, the Delhi government has scrapped its recent ban on fuel supply to older vehicles, just two days after it came into effect. The now-revoked rule had prohibited 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol vehicles from refueling at petrol stations across the city.

The ban, introduced on July 1, was part of an effort to enforce pollution control measures in line with National Green Tribunal and Supreme Court orders. Petrol pumps had been equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to identify and block refueling for non-compliant vehicles.

However, the move triggered widespread criticism for its abrupt rollout, lack of clarity, and harsh impact on lower-income vehicle owners. Transport unions, experts, and the public raised strong objections, prompting a quick reassessment.

Newly-appointed Environment Minister Rekha Gupta announced the rollback, citing public inconvenience and the need for a more balanced approach to pollution control.

What’s Changed:

  • Fuel access restored: Vehicles older than 10 years (diesel) and 15 years (petrol) can now refuel without restrictions.
  • No more seizures: Petrol stations will not deny fuel or seize older vehicles based on age.
  • ANPR cameras to stay (for now): Cameras will remain installed but will not be used for enforcement purposes.

A government spokesperson stated:

“After reviewing the challenges faced by citizens and the concerns raised by multiple stakeholders, we have decided to suspend the implementation of the July 1 directive. We remain committed to reducing pollution but will pursue more balanced and inclusive measures.”

Environmental advocates have welcomed the rollback but urged the government to pursue sustainable alternatives such as electric mobility, robust public transport, and emissions-based checks instead of age-based bans.

For now, thousands of Delhi vehicle owners have gained clarity and relief, as the city continues its struggle to balance environmental concerns with public needs.
