Digitizing Auto Recycling: How AMASS Leverages OEM Data to Connect Insurers and Recyclers

Won Jae Park, CEO of AMASS, a Seoul-based provider of digital solutions for the automotive industry, discusses how the company is transforming Korea’s automotive recycling landscape through advanced data integration and AI-driven technology. He explains how AMASS’s VIN-based platform overcomes regulatory hurdles and fragmented OEM data to deliver accurate, real-time parts identification. Park highlights the company’s role in improving efficiency, lowering costs, and fostering a more transparent, sustainable auto parts supply chain by streamlining processes for insurers and recyclers.

The foundation of AMASS’s platform is its sophisticated VIN-based data standardization technology. By linking each VIN to precise OEM option codes and part numbers, AMASS enables unmatched accuracy in identifying vehicle components. This system incorporates comprehensive part lists, detailed compatibility information, and a consolidated, real-time database of OEM, aftermarket, and recycled parts.

For insurance companies, AMASS provides tools that reduce claims costs and streamline operations. Automation significantly cuts the time spent verifying parts, labor, and paintwork, allowing insurers to process claims more efficiently and accurately. The platform’s fraud detection algorithms identify inflated or duplicate claims, and accurate estimates lead to improved loss ratios and customer satisfaction.

Recyclers also benefit tremendously from AMASS’s technology. With VIN-based identification, dismantlers can generate a full list of compatible parts as soon as a vehicle enters their facility. This reduces manual work and errors, while API integration with platforms like eBay, Coupang, and Naver opens new sales channels. The result is improved profitability, broader market access, and higher reuse rates that contribute to environmental goals.

AMASS has developed two key platforms: PARTSYNC and FIND PARTS. PARTSYNC is a supply chain management system tailored for recyclers, OEMs, and aftermarket suppliers. It automates inventory management and connects users to major marketplaces. FIND PARTS is aimed at consumers, allowing them to search for compatible parts using their vehicle number or VIN, with immediate access to OEM, aftermarket, and recycled options.

However, Korea’s lack of regulatory requirements for OEM data sharing poses a significant challenge. Unlike the U.S. and Europe, where automakers must provide vehicle data to third parties, Korean OEMs are under no such obligation. This results in fragmented and incomplete data, forcing recyclers to rely on manual processes that increase costs and errors.

To overcome these barriers, AMASS has built partnerships with global data providers and developed proprietary standardization technologies to map vehicle data accurately. Its platform aggregates and normalizes OEM, aftermarket, and recycler data, giving users access to a single, unified source of truth.

In 2024, AMASS formed a strategic partnership with the Korea Auto Dismantlement Recycling Association (KADRA), representing 563 dismantlers. Before this partnership, most members relied on a basic e-commerce tool that lacked automation and data precision. AMASS’s system is now being rolled out to KADRA members, helping them shift from manual to automated inventory management, enhance sales conversion through accurate listings, and improve compliance with environmental standards.

This transition is also helping Korean dismantlers adapt to changing market dynamics. With increasing consumer access to export platforms, dismantlers must shift toward high-value domestic recycling. AMASS supports this transition by offering better inventory visibility, accurate compatibility verification, and integration with domestic online marketplaces. These tools allow recyclers to compete on value rather than volume, strengthening their long-term competitiveness.

Insurance companies play a critical role in increasing the adoption of recycled parts. AMASS equips insurers with the data and tools to include recycled parts in claims with confidence. However, broader adoption will require policy incentives, certification programs, and consumer education. Insurers can lead by offering lower premiums for recycled parts use, backing warranty programs, and promoting supplier networks.

Artificial intelligence is another key component of AMASS’s offering. Its AI tools automate VIN queries, match compatible parts, and assess part condition using image recognition. Predictive analytics help forecast inventory needs and set pricing dynamically. Natural language processing (NLP) technologies are also being developed to improve insurance claim interpretation and dismantling efficiency.

These innovations bring significant operational benefits. They reduce labor costs, lower return rates, improve market transparency, and allow rapid expansion into new markets. By digitizing the recycling value chain, AMASS enables a smarter, more scalable industry.

AMASS is leading a much-needed transformation in Korea’s automotive parts sector. By harnessing data standardization, AI, and strategic partnerships, it provides a framework for more efficient, transparent, and environmentally sustainable operations. For insurers, it means faster, cheaper, and more accurate claims. For recyclers, it opens up new markets and higher margins. And for the entire industry, AMASS offers a glimpse of the future: connected, data-driven, and ready for global scale.
