eBay bets on digitising Australia’s recycled auto parts market

eBay is betting it can bring Australia’s largely offline recycled auto parts trade online by combining consumer demand data with better fitment tools, guarantees and clearer “trust signals” for buyers. The platform says lifting grading, testing and listing consistency, potentially through industry-backed standards and certification, will help professional recyclers scale and make recycled parts a mainstream option.

Gautam (Gary) Taluja, Category Manager, P&A at eBay Australia, discusses how the marketplace is positioning itself at the centre of Australia’s growing recycled auto parts sector, leveraging consumer insights, fitment tools, and trust signals to help move a traditionally offline market online. He outlines the steps being taken to lift quality and consistency across the industry, and how collaboration with national and state bodies could support a more professional, trusted route to market for recycled parts.

Digitising Australia’s multi-billion-dollar recycled parts market

eBay is a key driver of Australia’s recycled auto parts market, operating where buyer demand, seller capability, and industry transformation meet. Our latest research with YouGov shows that 82% of Australian vehicle owners are open to using recycled parts, and many are motivated not just by price but also by sustainability. The savings potential is significant; buyers can save an average of $2,144 over five years, and in some cases up to 85% when choosing a recycled part over a new equivalent.

What makes this market particularly important for us is the opportunity to digitise a traditionally offline sector. Recycled parts represent a multi-billion-dollar industry in Australia, but only around 20% of sales currently take place online. eBay is uniquely positioned to close that gap by connecting trusted professional recyclers with millions of potential buyers nationwide.

Building trust through standards, transparency and certification pathways

Across the industry, there’s a clear call for greater quality standards and trust. Buyers want reliable quality when purchasing recycled parts, and sellers are looking for meaningful ways to demonstrate their professionalism. To support this, eBay is working to lift standards across the sector by helping develop clearer expectations, stronger processes and more transparent practices.

Our focus is on creating a common framework for how parts are dismantled, tested and listed, giving buyers stronger trust signals while helping sellers clearly communicate the quality of their operations. This builds on the momentum of initiatives like our ‘Pro Recycler’ badge, while aiming for something more ambitious: a credible, unified approach that the whole industry can stand behind.

We’re looking closely at established programs in markets such as the US and UK, where structured industry frameworks, such as certification programs, have helped raise professionalism and buyer confidence. Our goal is to bring that level of maturity to Australia, working with local partners to develop an approach that reflects international best practice while meeting the needs of the Australian industry.

Meeting rising demand for affordable, reliable parts for older vehicles

We’ve been working closely with the Motor Traders Association of Australia and state associations to ensure our approach supports the great work already happening at a state level. Their insights are invaluable in helping us align with existing regulatory and dismantling standards and understand the practical realities recyclers face.

At the same time, we’re sharing national consumer insights with these bodies, including data on buyer behaviour, trust barriers and regional differences, to help unite the industry around a common understanding of what buyers need. Whether it’s through industry summits, seller events or direct consultation, our role is to act as a connector in what has historically been a very fragmented ecosystem.

Supporting drivers under cost pressure with fitment tools, guarantees and trusted recycler supply

There has definitely been an increasing demand for quality recycled parts. Cost-of-living pressures are significant, and as many Australians keep their cars longer, recycled parts offer an affordable, reliable solution. The research shows that nearly half of the surveyed drivers have struggled to source a part that’s no longer manufactured, making recycled components essential for keeping older vehicles on the road.

We support that demand in several ways. Firstly, buyers can shop from millions of recycled parts listings nationwide. Secondly, initiatives like our eBay Guaranteed Fit and eBay Money Back Guarantee give buyers confidence in what they are purchasing. We also highlight trusted professional recyclers through programs like ‘Pro Recycler’, making it easier for Australians to choose quality parts at great value.

Australians are a practical bunch. We value affordability, sustainability and getting the job done. Our research shows strong environmental sentiment: 64% of surveyed drivers agree that choosing recycled parts has a positive impact on the environment. We also have a strong DIY culture; around one in five drivers do at least some of their own repairs.

You also see interesting regional differences. For example, NSW drivers show higher environmental motivation, while Queensland drivers are more driven by availability. It’s a reminder that Australia isn’t one market – it’s many – and recycled parts meet a wide range of needs across those segments.

Reducing uncertainty with fitment tools, guarantees and industry education

Trust remains the primary challenge in the recycled parts category, and we are proactively addressing it. Buyers worry about whether a part will fit, what condition it arrives in, and what kind of support they’ll have if something goes wrong. That’s why we built our entire offering around removing those uncertainties.

eBay Guaranteed Fit, clear warranty information, streamlined returns, and transparent seller ratings provide meaningful reassurance. Notably, when surveyed, drivers were shown our eBay Money Back Guarantee, 75% reported increased confidence in purchasing a recycled part.

Complementing this, we continue to invest in education through collaborations with recyclers, insurers and industry bodies, supported by webinars and robust external communications designed to dispel misconceptions and demonstrate product quality.

Scaling recycled parts into a mainstream, higher-trust national market

We think the next few years will be transformative. As younger generations, especially Gen Z and Millennials, continue to embrace using recycled parts, the industry will move toward greater transparency, higher standards and broader adoption. eBay will play a central role in that evolution by expanding access to quality recycled parts, supporting professional recyclers as they scale online, and working with industry partners to drive national consistency.

Our goal is simple: make choosing recycled the smart, trusted and mainstream option for every Australian driver.
