eBay will ban the sale of standalone airbags, inflators and steering wheel airbag covers from 24 September 2026. The change affects all sellers and means automotive recyclers using the platform must remove prohibited listings before the deadline, while certain non-airbag components will remain permitted under specific regional conditions.

eBay has announced that airbags and airbag inflators will no longer be permitted for sale on its marketplace from 24 September 2026, following a review of the potential safety risks associated with these components. The policy will apply to all sellers and covers the entire airbag category.
eBay confirmed the change in a policy update to sellers, stating that standalone airbags, airbag inflators, including gas generators, and steering wheel airbag covers will no longer be allowed to be listed or sold after the September deadline.
The company said the decision followed a comprehensive review of the potential risks these products may pose to users of its marketplace.
Which products are affected?
From 24 September 2026, sellers will no longer be able to list the following standalone components:
- Airbags
- Airbag inflators, including gas generators
- Steering wheel airbag covers
The policy does not extend to every component associated with a vehicle’s airbag system.
Outside the United States, sellers will still be able to list certain permitted airbag-related components that do not contain an airbag or inflator. These include:
- Airbag control units
- Airbag crash or impact sensors
- Diagnostic modules
- Passenger sensors
Within the United States, however, these permitted components may only be listed by sellers that have already been approved by eBay.
Sellers given until 24 September
eBay is advising sellers to review all active, scheduled and draft listings within affected categories and remove prohibited products before the policy takes effect.
Sellers have been given 30 days to comply with the new requirements.
Any affected listings that remain online after 24 September will be removed by eBay.
The company said that listings removed by sellers themselves, or removed automatically by eBay as part of the policy change, will not negatively affect a seller’s policy compliance history.
However, attempting to relist prohibited products after the deadline could result in selling restrictions.
Safety concerns behind policy change
The announcement represents a significant change for sellers of automotive safety components, including professional vehicle recyclers that use online marketplaces to sell recycled OEM parts.
eBay said the decision followed a comprehensive review of the potential risks associated with selling these products through its marketplace.
The company has directed sellers to its Vehicle Related Policy for further guidance and is encouraging businesses with affected inventory to review their listings ahead of the deadline.
For automotive recyclers selling through eBay, the change means businesses will need to identify any affected inventory currently advertised on the platform and ensure prohibited listings are removed before 24 September 2026.
