Sigrauto reports a sharp rise in the number of vehicles treated by Spanish Authorised Treatment Centres (CATs) in February 2025. A total of 64,006 vehicles were processed, marking a 33.74% increase compared to February 2024. This surge is largely attributed to the influx of vehicles affected by the DANA weather event. Notably, passenger cars and light commercial vehicles saw the most significant growth, while heavy industrial vehicle deregistrations declined. Meanwhile, the number of motorcycles and mopeds treated continued to rise, along with a substantial increase in electric and hybrid vehicle processing.
In February 2025, Spanish Authorised Treatment Centres (CATs) processed 64,006 vehicles affected by Royal Decree 265/2021, reflecting a 33.74% increase compared to the 47,860 units treated in February 2024.
Similar to January, February saw substantial growth in passenger cars (+36.04%) and light commercial vehicles (+16.10%) compared to the previous year. This surge is primarily due to the high number of vehicles arriving at CATs as a result of the DANA weather event. Excluding approximately 18,000 DANA-affected vehicles, the numbers for February 2025 would align closely with those of February 2024.
The influx of DANA-affected vehicles has also lowered the average age of scrapped cars. In February 2025, the average age of treated vehicles was 19.30 years, marking a 10.88% decrease from 21.40 years in February 2024. The average age of DANA-related vehicles was notably younger, at 14.06 years.
Conversely, the number of heavy industrial vehicles deregistered at CATs declined for the second consecutive month. In February 2025, 516 heavy industrial vehicles were processed, representing a 19.25% drop from the 639 units in February 2024. However, motorcycles and mopeds experienced a notable rise, increasing by 13.44% from 5,274 units in February 2024 to 5,983 units in February 2025. Additionally, agricultural and industrial machinery data, newly recorded from January 2025, showed 679 units processed, bringing the total count of heavy-duty vehicles to 1,195 units.
Electric and hybrid vehicles also saw significant growth due to the continued arrival of DANA-affected cars. In February 2025, 151 pure electric M1 and N1 vehicles were processed, a 118.84% increase compared to February 2024. Similarly, 1,302 hybrid M1 and N1 vehicles were scrapped, marking a staggering 823.40% rise year-over-year. Notably, 91 of the 151 electric vehicles and 990 of the 1,302 hybrid vehicles originated from the province of Valencia.
