German Car Brands Dominate Used Parts Demand in France, According to Recent Study by Ovoko

A recent study by the Ovoko marketplace reveals that German car brands dominate demand for used parts in France, a trend that starkly contrasts with findings from other platforms in the sector. This divergence raises questions about regional market dynamics, platform-specific demand, and consumer behaviour in the French reused parts market.

French Car Models Lead Used Vehicle Registrations

According to the latest data, among the 435,883 used vehicle registrations recorded in November 2024, the most popular models remain the Citroën C3, Peugeot 208, and Renault Clio. The Renault Zoé also leads in the second-hand electric car market, reflecting its enduring appeal despite growing competition from models like the Dacia Spring.

Ovoko: A Hub for German Car Parts

Ovoko’s search history reveals a strong preference for German brands. Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi are the most frequently searched for parts on the platform. Remarkably, no French car brands make the top of the list, even when examining regional search trends.

This phenomenon appears unique to Ovoko. Other key players in the used parts market, such as Opisto, Caréco, and Global PRE (Mapiecedoccase platform), report that French brands—particularly Renault, Peugeot, and Citroën—dominate parts demand. For instance:

  • Opisto highlights strong interest in parts for the Renault Clio 3, Peugeot 207, and Peugeot 307.
  • Caréco confirms that demand closely reflects the vehicle fleet, with French models topping the charts.
  • Global PRE sees Peugeot 307 parts leading demand, followed by Citroën C4 Picasso and C4 models.
  • Aniel Marketplace similarly reports French manufacturers holding the top spots, with German brands such as Volkswagen and Audi trailing behind.
Speculative Factors Behind Ovoko’s German Parts Preference

The reasons behind Ovoko’s preference for German car parts remain speculative. Possible explanations include:

  • SEO and Platform Strategy: Ovoko’s search engine optimization may attract users specifically looking for German parts.
  • Specialized Offerings: A broader inventory or focus on German parts could naturally drive demand.
  • Brand Perception: Ovoko attributes this trend to the enduring popularity of German brands among French consumers, who value their perceived robustness, reliability, and appeal.

While Ovoko cites an “attachment” to German manufacturers, no other platform active in France has observed similar behaviour, underscoring the uniqueness of this trend.

Regional Price Disparities on Ovoko

Ovoko’s study also highlights significant regional price differences for used parts across France. Average prices vary depending on the location of End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) centers:

  • Brittany records the lowest average price at €63.60.
  • Île-de-France has the highest average at €78.60.
  • Nationally, the average price for a reused part sold via Ovoko is €71.40.
Most In-Demand Parts

The Ovoko study identifies the most sought-after parts in France:

  • Rear lights
  • Headlights/high beams
  • Engine control modules

However, the Île-de-France region diverges from this trend, where electric mirrors top the list of searched parts, followed by rear lights and headlights.

Key Takeaway for Industry Players

While French vehicles dominate the domestic market and reused parts demand on most platforms, Ovoko’s focus on German brands highlights an interesting niche. Whether driven by platform strategy, specialized offerings, or consumer perception, this trend presents both opportunities and challenges for suppliers and distributors in the used parts market. Understanding regional pricing disparities and part-specific demand will remain crucial for businesses looking to navigate and capitalize on these market dynamics.
