Green Parts – Drivers Demand Sustainable Car Repairs

A new study by Solera, a leader in vehicle lifecycle management, reveals a growing disconnect between European drivers’ desire for sustainable car repairs and what repair shops actually offer.

While over half (53%) of European drivers express genuine concern about the environmental impact of car maintenance, less than a third (32%) were even given the option to choose used parts during their latest repair. This is despite the fact that using recycled parts is a key way to minimise environmental impact.

The survey, which polled over 8,000 drivers, highlights a significant opportunity for repair shops to gain a competitive edge. A whopping 59% of drivers said they’d be more likely to choose a garage offering sustainable options, with similar numbers likely to return and recommend such businesses.

“Eco-conscious drivers are here to stay,” says Jing Liao, Solera’s chief administration officer. “This presents a clear opportunity for businesses to embrace sustainable practices and contribute to a healthier planet.”

However, there’s a gap in understanding. While using recycled parts is a major green benefit, 40% of drivers mistakenly believe garages only offer them to save money, not for environmental reasons. Additionally, nearly half (45%) assume sustainable repairs will cost more.

Arnaud Agostini, international managing director at Solera, emphasises the importance of educating consumers. “Repairing parts instead of replacing them can be both cost-effective and eco-friendly,” he explains. “Insurers and garages can play a crucial role in informing customers about green options, ultimately attracting new business.”

Solera is addressing these challenges with its industry-first “Sustainable Estimatics” tool. This software empowers insurers to measure and offset the carbon footprint of their claims process. By analysing data and recommending repairs over replacements, the tool helps reduce emissions throughout the repair journey.

The company’s initiative highlights a growing trend: Consumers are increasingly environmentally conscious, and the auto repair industry needs to adapt. By embracing sustainable practices and educating customers, repair shops can not only benefit the planet but also gain a competitive edge in the evolving market.
