India – Automakers Introduce Discounts for Scrapping Old Vehicles

In India, automakers Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai Kia and Toyota are offering up to Rs 25,000 in discounts for buyers who scrap old vehicles, promoting fleet modernization and environmental sustainability.

Several major automakers, including Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai, Kia, and Toyota, are introducing a new incentive for consumers who scrap their old vehicles. Buyers will be eligible for a discount of up to Rs 25,000 on new car purchases when they present a scrapping certificate for their old vehicle. The offer will be either a 1.5% discount on the new vehicle’s price or Rs 20,000, whichever is lower. This initiative comes after extensive discussions between the central government and the automobile industry, aimed at encouraging the removal of older, less efficient vehicles from the roads while giving consumers a financial boost during the festive season.

This agreement was finalized through the efforts of Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, who engaged in detailed discussions with a delegation of CEOs from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Other key figures in the meeting included Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra, Minister of State Ajay Tamta, and Anurag Jain, Secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

The scrappage scheme is a key element of the government’s larger push towards fleet modernization and a circular economy. By offering incentives to consumers who scrap older vehicles, the government aims to reduce pollution and improve road safety while stimulating new vehicle sales. Consumers who scrap their old, end-of-life vehicles will receive a scrappage certificate, making them eligible for discounts on new car purchases. This initiative is supported by both commercial and passenger vehicle manufacturers, providing a significant financial advantage to consumers and simultaneously benefiting the environment.

In addition to discounts from mainstream passenger vehicle brands like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai, Kia, and Toyota, luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz India is offering a flat Rs 25,000 discount, which is an additional incentive beyond its existing offers. This initiative provides a great opportunity for consumers to upgrade their vehicles while also contributing to a cleaner and safer environment.

The incentives are not limited to passenger vehicles. Commercial vehicle manufacturers such as Tata Motors, Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra & Mahindra, Force Motors, Isuzu Motors, and SML Isuzu are also offering discounts. For commercial cargo vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, a 3% discount on the ex-showroom price will be available for those scrapping old vehicles. For vehicles under 3.5 tonnes, a 1.5% discount will apply. Additionally, a 2.75% discount is offered to those scrapping heavier commercial vehicles using a traded certificate of deposit, and a 1.25% discount is available for lighter vehicles under the same condition.

Despite the government’s significant push, the voluntary scrapping of vehicles has not yet gained widespread momentum. The target is to scrap 90,000 old government vehicles by March 2025. To support this effort, the government is establishing 60 registered vehicle scrapping centers and 75 automated testing stations. These initiatives are part of a larger vision to modernize India’s vehicle fleet, reduce emissions, and create a more sustainable transportation system.

This scrappage scheme offers an opportunity for consumers to benefit from significant discounts while upgrading to newer, more efficient vehicles, contributing to the reduction of pollution and enhancement of road safety.
