InoBat Auto announces pioneering step in battery manufacture from recycled rare-earth metals

InoBat Auto (“InoBat” or the “Company”), the European pioneer of premium electric vehicle battery R&D, engineering and production, is delighted to announce that it has reached a key milestone in the development of its design capabilities, proving that recovered key materials from used batteries can be re-used in the production of new batteries.

Alongside its recycling partners, InoBat has confirmed using its cell optimisation and design mechanisms to prove that recovered active cathode material from end-of-life batteries can then be used in the production of new batteries. The batteries produced from recycled materials perform in line with batteries made from entirely new material and is a key milestone for InoBat, reinforcing the Company’s circular economy capabilities and “cradle-to-cradle approach”.

The announcement is a key milestone, not only for InoBat but also for the battery and electric (EV) industries in general. The transition to battery-powered vehicles is fundamental to reducing global warming, however, the production of EV batteries is a carbon-intensive process and mining raw materials can be damaging to the environment. The optimisation process that InoBat has developed significantly reduces the impact of battery manufacture, lowering the need to source new raw material and minimising the carbon emissions associated with battery production. With OEMs increasingly pledging to use recycled materials in the production of their vehicles, as well as more stringent recycling regulations in the EU and globally, InoBat’s sustainable, cost-effective process will support these efforts.

InoBat is also backed by strategic cornerstone investors and co-developers including Rio Tinto, Ideanomics, Amara Raja and the private arm of the World Bank, the IFC. These will allow the Company to complete its R&D centre and pilot plant in Slovakia for which construction has commenced. The facility is due to be operational in the beginning of 2023 and targeting an initial 1GWh of capacity once complete in 2024. InoBat has also recently opened its UK office at the University of Warwick Science Park.
