With the aim of initiating a collective mobilization in favor of the acceleration of the circular economy part (PIEC), Mobilians launched its first barometer in 2023, in partnership with GiPA, aimed at collecting the perception by maintenance-repair professionals with regard to the PIEC, and the levers to promote its deployment. The results of this third barometer reveal a notable improvement in this perception both in terms of knowledge and use of the PIEC by professionals.
A new barometer confirming the progress of repairers’ knowledge of PIEC
Mobilians publishes the third edition of its barometer on the development of the use of PIEC by car repairers (panel of 501 repair professionals – approved repairers, MRA, auto centers, body shops, etc.). Several indicators allow us to monitor progress on this subject, whether it is the level of knowledge by repairers, the desire of repairers to use PIEC, etc.
The awareness meetings organized by Mobilians, as well as the communication campaigns aimed at professionals in order to inform them and promote good practices in this area, have been beneficial. Repairers have taken ownership of the PIEC concept, it is now a fundamental trend. Today, the PIEC proposal has become a reflex for all repairers.
In fact, today 93% of repairers know or think they know what PIECs are, whereas only 65% did so in September 2023.
Let us recall that reused auto parts (commonly called “second-hand”) represent parts resulting from the dismantling of end-of-life vehicles (parts that are traced, checked, guaranteed). The PIEC decree of May 30, 2016 defines reused parts as “components and elements that are marketed by approved end-of-life vehicle (ELV) treatment centers (…) after having been prepared for reuse within the meaning of the provisions of Article L. 541-1-1 of this code.”
Remanufactured parts (or “standard exchange”) come from a rigorous and standardized industrial process allowing a used part or product to be restored to a state of performance and functionality equivalent to or even superior to the original and for the same use.
The results of this third barometer demonstrate an increasingly high level of use of PIEC among repairers.
Thus, PIEC, standard exchange or used parts are perceived by half of the respondents as a real solution, in particular: when the new part is not available or out of stock (97% of responses), because it is a competitive and economic advantage for users (89%), or because it represents good practice for repairers to respond to climate issues (79%).
72% of repairers are in favour of installing PIEC.
Furthermore, 57% of repairers believe that they are made aware of the PIEC by their parts suppliers or by their network. This is also true for the customers themselves, 48% of whom spontaneously request alternative parts to the new part.
Concretely, 57% of repairers say they systematically offer PIEC, which represents an increase of +10 points, and 73% of customers say they follow the repairers’ recommendations regarding PIEC.
Although there are still some obstacles to the use of PIEC in repairs, such as the availability of parts, cost and profitability, awareness-raising work carried out among professionals and the general public has encouraged the growth of the use of PIEC by repairers.
Mobilians is also continuing its work with insurers to promote the use of PIEC in the event of a car accident and to increase the rate of use of these parts. Furthermore, Mobilians has widely raised awareness among public authorities about the adoption of a “circular VAT” at 5.5% to increase the use of PIEC. These levers are important for creating a virtuous effect.
