According to Auto Recycling Netherland (ARN), the Netherlands achieved good results in car recycling, which is done together with their 238 chain partners. Here, they have listed the ten most striking facts of the past year.
- 98.7% of discarded cars were put to good use. 25.6% was realized by car dismantling companies. The remaining 73.1% was achieved by the shredder companies and post-shredder factory. Only 1.3% of the total weight of a scrapped car could not be recovered.
- The recycling rate of 98.7% consisted of 88.1% product (reuse) and material reuse (recycling) and 10.6% energy recovery or another useful application.
- The share of product and material reuse has increased slightly in 2023 compared to 2022. This is because the share of reuse at car dismantling companies has increased.
- The share of scrap cars that have been dismantled at the car dismantling companies affiliated with ARN increased to 83.7% (2022: 80.9%).
- A discarded car before disassembly weighed an average of 1,083 kg, 11 kilos more than in 2022.
- A historically low number of cars were deregistered for disassembly: 159,262 vehicles compared to 176,887 in 2022.
- 133,224 discarded cars were dismantled by car dismantling companies affiliated with ARN.
- The average age at which a car is scrapped was 19 years and 7 months at the end of 2023. An increase of two months compared to 2022.
- The size of the Dutch vehicle fleet will increase by 2% in 2023.
- The recycling contribution for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles was €22.50 in 2023. That was € 2.50 less than the year before. As of January 1, 2024, the contribution has been further reduced to €20 per car.

Sustainability Report 2023
ARN recently published its 2023 Sustainability Report: More than thirty years of development and refinement. Here, you will find more facts and figures about car and car battery recycling.
ARN envisions a future where usable raw materials are efficiently recovered and reused at high quality and acceptable costs, reducing the need for new raw materials. This approach supports the circular economy. Their actions are guided by existing and emerging regulations that shape this framework.
