Zero-waste and carbon neutrality have become vital in the automotive sector in recent times. Urban air pollution is a serious issue, with unfit vehicles contributing significantly in densely populated countries like India. The Indian Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) states that vehicular emissions make up nearly 30% of India’s air pollution. Vehicles older than 15 years emit nearly five times more pollutants than newer ones, worsening health and environmental problems. Despite government efforts, only about 1% of de-registered vehicles are processed in eco-friendly Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facilities (RVSFs), highlighting a critical gap in the system that requires urgent action.

To tackle this challenge, India’s Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has introduced a Voluntary Vehicle-fleet Modernisation Program (V-VMP), also known as the Vehicle Scrapping Policy. This initiative offers Certificates of Deposit (CD) to ELV owners. A CD owner is entitled to several benefits on purchase of new vehicles.

However, this solution needs more robust infrastructure and streamlined processes to reach its full potential. Meta Materials Circular Markets (MMCM), an envirotech enterprise focusing on the end-of-life vehicle sector and setting new standards for resource circularity in the automotive industry. MMCM has taken on the challenge of ensuring the government’s V-VMP policy becomes a success.

Revolutionizing the End-of-Life Vehicle Sector

MMCM is an Automotive Circularity Orchestrator (ACO), building digital ecosystems rooted in the circular economy. By championing resource circularity, MMCM offers innovative solutions to make the automotive industry more sustainable. Their services focus on creating a viable market for environmentally friendly practices within the sector.

A) DigiELV: MoRTH-authorized CD Trading Platform

DigiELV is a platform designed to facilitate the trading of Certificates of Deposit (CD) linked with the Government of India’s VAHAN portal. This platform allows users to buy and sell CDs seamlessly. Under the new Vehicle Scrappage Policy, the government offers incentives like Registration Fee waivers and Road Tax discounts to new vehicle buyers, and CDs are a crucial part of these incentives. By creating a vibrant market for these certificates, MMCM is driving economic resilience and providing a financial impetus for stakeholders to adopt eco-friendly practices.

B) AutoLoop: Streamlining Vehicle Scrapping Operations

MMCM’s AutoLoop is an end-to-end cloud-based solution designed to automate operations for RVSFs. It provides a centralized dashboard, offering insights into RVSF activities, including ELV leads, job card statuses, and processing times. AutoLoop allows for comprehensive ELV background checks, including blacklist and hypothecation status verification. Its intelligent compliance systems ensure that all scrapping operations adhere to AIS-129 guidelines, mitigating the risk of audit issues.

Key features include:

  • Customizable Reports
  • Inventory Tracking
  • Intelligent Compliance
  • Annual Reporting

AutoLoop also simplifies the ELV assessment and price generation process, offering pre-loaded scrapping templates to save time and improve overall efficiency.

C) Decarbonization Program: A Crucial Step for a Greener Tomorrow

Decarbonization is vital in the battle against climate change, and MMCM’s Decarbonization Program, launched in December 2023, is at the forefront of this effort. With the potential to save approximately 2 million tons of CO2 in India by the end of 2035, the program helps Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and other businesses to meet their Net Zero goals.

D) ELV Credits: 100% Traceable Carbon Credits

MMCM has partnered with a majority of India’s RVSFs to mint ELV carbon credits, an innovative solution aimed at reducing the automotive industry’s carbon footprint. These high-quality credits offer financial incentives for stakeholders to scrap old, polluting vehicles and replace them with newer, more efficient models.

It’s important to note that MMCM is the world’s first and only source of automobile material circularity-based carbon reduction. As the demand grows for investments that directly influence value chains, ELV carbon credits provide a robust solution for OEMs, logistics, banks, insurance companies, and others to fulfill their ESG commitments by offsetting their Scope 3 emissions. You can play a key role in the fight against climate change and effectively offset your carbon emissions using ELV credits. learn more

The Bigger Picture: Addressing the Informal Sector

India is the fourth-largest producer and third-largest generator of ELVs, expected to hit 22 million by 2025. However, the informal scrapping sector handles over 90% of this activity, leading to environmental harm, tax evasion, and the spread of counterfeit goods. MMCM tackles this issue by supporting government-authorized scrappers, closing the viability gap, and promoting ethical vehicle scrapping. With its technology and data-driven methods, MMCM seeks to formalize the scrapping process, reducing exploitation and encouraging eco-friendly practices.

A Greener Path Forward

By promoting responsible recycling, MMCM is setting new standards for businesses to thrive while helping advance the green revolution in India. The company’s innovative solutions demonstrate that economic growth and environmental sustainability can go hand in hand.

The journey to a more circular and sustainable automotive industry has only just begun, and Meta Materials Circular Markets is leading the charge.
