Plug’n Drive launches $1000 incentive to scrap a gas car plus $1000 towards a used electric vehicle
As of 1st February 2020, Ontario residents qualify for a new incentive of $1,000 if they scrap their old gas car and replace it with a used electric car. This program is being offered to encourage drivers to make the switch to low carbon transportation and reduce air pollution.
The Scrappage Incentive is in addition to the Used EV Incentive program that launched in April 2019, which provides $1,000 off the purchase of a used fully electric or plug-in hybrid electric car. Combined, these two programs provide Ontario’s drivers with a total of $2,000 in potential incentives to make the switch to a used electric vehicle (EV). In just nine months since the program began, Plug’n Drive has paid out approximately 300 incentives to Ontarians who have purchased a used EV. Both incentives are offered for a limited time while funding lasts.

“This Used EV incentive and new Scrappage program achieve the dual aim of increasing EV adoption in the Province and taking it one step further by getting old gas cars off the road. We are thrilled at the early results of the Used EV incentive program and look forward to the Scrappage program gaining similar traction. Both programs give consumers an added incentive to make the switch, helping them save money and reduce both GHG emissions and air pollution.”
To qualify for the incentive, drivers must:
- Apply to the Used EV Incentive program by attending a Used EV seminar, taking an EV test drive and purchasing a used fully electric or plug-in hybrid electric car; and
- Scrap an old gasoline or diesel-powered car that, at the time of scrapping, is operable and was insured in Ontario for at least the previous six months.
“I think the Used EV Incentive is an amazing program that has a ripple effect,” said Chere Schwindt from Waterloo, who is a Used EV Incentive program recipient. “It really inspired me to buy an EV sooner rather than later. Now that I’m an EV Owner, so many people ask me about my car and I’m spreading the word.”
The Scrappage Incentive program is delivered through a partnership between Plug’n Drive and the Automotive Recyclers of Canada (ARC). ARC’s vehicle retirement program ensures the vehicles are responsibly recycled and the VIN retired.
Steve Fletcher, Executive Director of ARC said:
“We are pleased to support a program that takes old gas cars off the road in an environmentally responsible manner,”
He added: “Our members must meet a high standard for processing and recycling of vehicles in order to remain part of our association.”
Each of these incentives are the first of their kind in Ontario and funded privately. Both programs are in collaboration with Clean Air Partnership and made possible thanks to the support of the M. H. Brigham Foundation.
