Salling Autogenbrug Pioneers Advanced Recycling Efforts

Salling Autogenbrug has taken another bold step in advancing its recycling practices, aiming to reduce waste and elevate sustainability in the automotive recycling industry. According to Lise Korsgaard, Sustainability Manager at Salling Autogenbrug, the process of recycling residual materials is both intricate and ongoing. “We are constantly exploring better recycling solutions for the materials we extract from scrap cars that traditionally end up being incinerated or landfilled,” she explains.

One of their latest initiatives focuses on the foam used in car seats. This material, along with the rest of the seat, has historically been destined for incineration. However, Salling Autogenbrug is now dismantling car seats into individual components to minimize waste and elevate as many materials as possible within the waste hierarchy.

Innovative Foam Recycling Trial

Currently, Salling Autogenbrug is testing the recyclability of seat foam, with an initial batch sourced from around 100 cars sent to a recycling partner in Belgium. This partner employs advanced technologies to sort, shred, and transform the foam back into raw materials suitable for new foam production.

Lise Korsgaard acknowledges the complexity of the process: “We hope we will be able to use these foams, but we are not 100% sure yet. We will need to find a way to sort them by technologies.”

The team is optimistic about the potential for a closed-loop system where old seat foam can be transformed into new foam. This would mark a significant shift away from incineration, achieving a meaningful reduction in CO2 emissions while accounting for the energy required for processing and transportation.

Aiming for a Sustainable Future

If successful, this project could set a new benchmark for sustainability in the automotive recycling sector, aligning with Salling Autogenbrug’s mission to find innovative solutions for traditionally hard-to-recycle materials. With this initiative, the company is demonstrating its commitment to reducing environmental impact and advancing the circular economy.

As the trial progresses, Salling Autogenbrug remains hopeful that the foam recycling project will yield positive results, paving the way for more sustainable practices in the industry. This ambitious endeavor highlights the importance of collaboration and innovation in achieving a greener future.
