Sortbat Group’s full acquisition of Sortbat Norway strengthens its independent role in Nordic battery precycling as end-of-life EV, maritime and stationary storage volumes grow. The company says independence will allow customers to choose recycling partners freely while supporting safe handling, incident response, reuse, second-life assessment and compliant battery recycling.
Sortbat Group (Belgium) has acquired the remaining 20% stake in Sortbat Norway from BatteriRetur and is now the company’s sole owner. As a result, Sortbat Norway becomes fully independent from Producer Responsibility Organisations (PRO) and recyclers, further strengthening its position as a specialist in battery precycling. At the same time, the acquisition supports Sortbat Group’s ambitions to expand its footprint across the Nordic battery market.

Independent positioning in a growing market
The acquisition comes as Europe prepares for strong growth in end-of-life battery volumes, driven by the first large generation of electric vehicles reaching end-of-life and by increasing regulatory requirements around battery handling, traceability and recycling. In this context, independent precycling expertise is becoming an increasingly important part of the European battery value chain.
As a pioneer in large-format battery handling, Sortbat Norway has helped shape the development of battery precycling in Norway over the past decade and continues to play a leading role in the sector. The company supports batteries used in electric mobility, maritime operations and stationary energy storage systems. Building on this experience, Sortbat Norway aims to continue leading the development of battery precycling services in Norway while contributing to Sortbat Group’s growing international presence across the Nordic region. By strengthening cooperation between Norway, Sweden and the wider Group, Sortbat is creating synergies and share expertise across markets.
Full independence gives customers complete freedom in selecting their preferred recycling partner, while continuing to deliver the safety, compliance and technical expertise that have defined Sortbat Norway’s approach for the past decade. It also enables Sortbat Norway to assess opportunities for battery reuse and second-life applications where technically and environmentally appropriate, supporting both regulatory compliance and the transition towards a more circular battery economy.
