The 2024 Recyclers Road Trip Through America’s Auto Yards

The 2024 Recyclers Road Trip was far more than a trek across California and Nevada—it was a journey igniting new connections, innovative ideas, and renewed inspiration within the global auto recycling community. What began as an ambitious cross-border venture of 40 recyclers representing 11 different countries quickly evolved into a vibrant exchange of insights and a testament to the passion that defines this industry. The trip was a powerful reminder of the dedication to sustainability and innovation shared by professionals determined to reshape the future of auto recycling.

Starting from the heart of Sacramento, California, the road trip participants dove into an impressive range of recycling operations, each distinct in its approach yet united by a shared purpose. Each stop showcased a different facet of the industry, from high-volume facilities to niche specialists. In the Sacramento area, participants visited Auto Gator, J&W Auto Wreckers, I Pull U Pull, and Subway Trucks, each offering a unique perspective on the business. The journey through Rancho Cordova, a hub for auto recycling, allowed the team to witness specialised operations at six different locations in a single day. Notable visits included Donut Auto Parts, specialising in Tesla; Exotic Auto Recycling, focusing on luxury brands like Ferrari and Maserati; and Sac City Auto Parts, which caters to Nissan and Infiniti enthusiasts. Additional stops at Car Part Solutions, European Auto Recycling, and Prestige Auto Parts showcased diverse approaches that offered valuable lessons in specialised recycling practices.

The tour culminated in Reno, Nevada, with a B & R Autowrecking visit, followed by three intensive days at the 81st Annual Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA) Convention. The participants immersed themselves in seminars, workshops, and networking events that provided deeper insights into industry trends, regulatory shifts, and cutting-edge technologies. The convention underscored a central theme from the road trip: regardless of a company’s size or scope, there are always opportunities to learn, adapt, and innovate.

Beyond the operational and business insights, the road trip fostered an enduring sense of community. Auto recycling is more than just an industry; it’s a network of like-minded individuals committed to sustainability. This was a unique chance to build lasting connections for participants hailing from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Estonia, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, New Zealand, Poland, the UK, and the US. The group exchanged stories, knowledge, and support between long bus rides and shared meals, weaving a tapestry of camaraderie that transcended borders. Each conversation reaffirmed their shared mission to elevate the standards and practices within automotive recycling.

None of this would have been possible without Terry Charlton’s efforts, whose meticulous planning transformed this ambitious event into a reality. Thanks are also due to the gracious hosts at each stop and the drivers who ensured the group stayed on track. Each participant returned home with fresh ideas, valuable industry insights, and a reinforced commitment to their roles within the auto recycling ecosystem.
