In the US, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) recently recognized two auto recycling facilities with its highest environmental performance designation, the Indiana Clean Yard – Gold Level award.

Northlake Auto Recyclers Inc. (Hammond) and Metro Auto Recyclers (Valparaiso) both received Gold Level status this year. For Northlake, this marks its ninth Indiana Clean Yard – Gold Level award; Metro Auto Recyclers has now earned the designation eight times.
Recognizing leadership on the ground
IDEM’s Compliance & Technical Assistance Program (CTAP) Senior Environmental Engineer Hani Sharaya and Pollution Prevention & Compliance Assistance Manager Julie Rhodes presented a commemorative certificate to Northlake Auto Recyclers owner Marty Hollingshead. CTAP Senior Environmental Manager Malorie Medellin presented a certificate to Metro Auto Recyclers Operations Manager John Leegwater.
Setting the bar for environmental performance
Northlake Auto Recyclers was also the only facility this year to score 100 percent on its Indiana Clean Yard inspection. According to IDEM, Hollingshead has played a key role in collaborating with both the auto recycling industry and the agency to recommend program improvements, support the growth of the Indiana Clean Yard initiative and promote higher standards of environmental stewardship across the sector.
About the Indiana Clean Yard program
IDEM developed the Indiana Clean Yard recognition program in partnership with the Automotive Recyclers of Indiana (ARI). The program offers two tiers, Indiana Clean Yard and Indiana Clean Yard – Gold Level, to recognize auto salvage yard operators that meet rigorous environmental and operational best-practice requirements.
